Although a trip to a clinic may be well worth it, most dentists and physicians are still in the dark as to the real nature of halitosis. Before you go for a check up, try to cure bad breath at home and see if it's something that's totally manageable all on your own. Here are some suggestions on how to keep bad breath at bay:
* Never miss out on your breakfast. You need it to start your engine and get your going for the busy day ahead plus, it replaces the foul smell built in your lungs during your sleep. Aside from that, food also cleans the back of your tongue, making your mouth smell more tolerable.
* Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue. This is basic and something you may have heard before. But it wouldn't hurt to remind you especially if you've been slacking off in the mouth cleaning department lately. Don't use the bristles of the toothbrush on your tongue because they will only help spread the bacteria and mucus all over. Instead, use the rough surface that most toothbrushes have or you may also use the lower surface of a teaspoon.
* Gargle mouthwash before going to bed. The mouth's passive activity during sleep builds malodor and gives off bad breath after waking up. Washing your mouth with some cleansing agents before bedtime will help reduce this effect.
* Drink lots of water. Fluids are a great way to cure bad breath at home because it supplies high amounts of saliva needed to wash your mouth all the time.
